Often called the first "Modern General," the memoirs of this Civil War General are a fascinating read. We've included a number of maps in this "expanded" edition of the memoirs and added the tribute from James G. Blaine that was included in the Fourth Edition, published in 1891.

Must Read for History Nuts

I read this memoir some years ago at the same time as I read Grant's. Since then much interpretive, rewritten history has appeared making re-reading very valuable to history buffs. For me, history of all periods is best read from memoirs and dairies leavened with reads of later written, history perspectives. I have read recent agenda driven history re-writes and found most of them selective drivel. But there is now a crop of more honest, perspective history written from new material derived from new sources such as now appearing on Grant and Sherman. One reason I find Amazon reader's comments so useful is identifying the agenda driven author. I hope the new perspectives will encourage people to find memoirs such as Sherman more interesting. I am sure that people who really want to get into the "head" of people from tougher times will find this long collection of contemporary material fascinating as I did.

a review of sherman's memoirs

In the 1990s I read his memoirs and visited four battlefields on which he fought.
My interest in the Civil War came first, but was soon followed by discovery that
my great-grandfather and five of his Ohio brothers and cousins served under him.
Three of them died in battle or Rebel prison.
Since reading his memoirs, I always felt them to be one of the most valuable
sources of solid, believable information about the civil war.

Remarkably Good Read

Remarkably well written, and brutally honest. One of the few memoirs by an historical figure without a heavy coat of varnish on the facts. As a Southerner, I was not expecting to be impressed, but I was.
