Heavenly Highway Hymnbook great for nursing homes.

I have a collection of hymnbooks from several churches. This book adds a historical note to my collection.
Many of these songs were praise songs of the 1930's. I am a member of a chorus that travels to nursing homes, and I have found these songs are the songs that many of those people know. I live in Texas, where many of these songs were sung at tent meetings.

Shape note hymnal.

First ran into it at a gospel sing accompanying the big festival in Mountain View Arkansas back in the 70's. The church that hosted the sing had it as their regular hymnal. I've had and lost several copies since then. The newer editions don't have the songs I loved.

If you love country or bluegrass gospel music, it's a good one to have. I won't say that you MUST HAVE it, but I'm always glad to have a copy around. Doesn't have everything. No "Watchman Tell Me" for instance. But lots of others, Kneel at the Cross, Gospel Ship, We'll Understand It All By and By.

There are a couple of other editions, not as good for someone who loves the the particular genre. None with the brown paper cover, as far as I know.

Good old-time gospel

This hymnal brings back memories from my childhood, with old southern gospel favorites. The Heavenly Highway Hymnal has gone over very well with the older popluation at my church. However, it is written in shape notes, which the younger members complain are hard for them to read. The only real drawback I find is the size. The hymnal comes in 2 formats, a large print edition for easy reading, and a smaller "regular" edition. The larger book is almost too large to fit on our lecturn, while the smaller hymnal is so small even members much younger than myself say it is difficult to read. A nice mid-size edition would make this a more desireable purchase.

Beware Sexual Content

I absolutly love Myers textbooks on psychology-well written-interesting-and informative. However, unless you want to read constantly, and I mean constantly about sexual studies on erectile dysfunction,sexual arousal, sexual response, sex sex sex in EVERY module reguardless of the topic being discussed look somewhere else. I know that sex is a psychological topic (I am a psychologist) but this is ridiculous. I just don't understand it and I am not a prude! These textbooks are used everyday in high school AP psychology classes. In module three Myers uses a study by Collins 2004 in which it states, "The more sexual content teens see on TV, the more likely they are to have sex." How about how often they read it in their AP Psych class?! Honestly, every third page has a study example concerning sex. And even sexual jokes when discussing hearing loss by noise to encourage the use of earplugs, "Condoms or, safer yet, abstinence-is like earplugs or walk away." ha ha ha NOT! I really wanted to use these textbooks to teach my class but I honestly in good conscience cannot.

Book itself is a great study tool, even if it's an older edition. I had to replace this book to graduate since mine got mixed up somewhere. I ordered mine from Molliebooks and they were very prompt.

The Standard Evangelical Commentary on John

Anyone hoping to write an exhaustive commentary on the Fourth Gospel will die long before they finish. The FG is widely recognized as being the kind of work in which the interpretational possibilities are almost endless. One can focus on Christology, election, sacramentalism, atonement and resurrection, the church, or none of the above. As a result, when one reads any commentary on John, the reader is advised to pay attention to what the author tends to pay attention to, because this will say something about the author's own theological emphases. This is good to know because not only will the reader get a better idea of where the author is coming from, he will also be on alert for ways in which the commentary may be imbalanced as a result of emphasizing certain things and neglecting others. Such is the reality of Johannine scholarship and the richness of the FG.

In the case of Carson, the reader will find the strongest evangelical defense of apostolic authorship among the commentary encyclopedia devoted to the FG. As a result, the reader will also find a commentary that takes the historical veracity of the narrative seriously and attempts to interact with the material from the perspective of considering the material to be normative and historically reliable. This alone separates this commentary from most other major commentaries on the FG in the last 40 years.

Carson properly interacts with the heavy hitters in Johannine scholarship such as Bultmann, Brown, Barrett, Smith, and Culpepper. Carson's interaction with Brown and Culpepper is especially good and provides a solid rebuttal to their differing approaches to literary interpretation.

The commentary is thorough in its coverage of the FG, but like all commentaries, is inevitably incomplete. Carson has his hot buttons just like everyone else, and the result is a good emphasis on issues such as authorship, testimony, election, and christology. The downside is that other emphases, like the much neglected motif of hospitality in the FG and its ramifications on christology, election, the church, etc is ignored. Is this enough to give the book a 4 star rating instead of 5? If so, then no commentary on John would be worthy of a 5 star rating for the reasons already mentioned. For what Carson attempts to do, he does it very well. For this reason, the book deserves 5 stars and should be the standard work on John that evangelicals in particular should consult.

A great John Commentary

I have just finished reading through this commentary for the third time. I have read many commentaries on John's Gospel and consider this one of the best evangelical commentaries on John available today. Carson interacts with many views on controversial items but is never boring. The commentary is a good mix of excellent and profound scholarship but never loses its readability. If one is not familiar with the Greek Language of the Bible this commentary is a good one. If you do have a working knowlege of Greek, Carson is an excellent Greek exegete and you will find satisfaction here. I recommend this great commentary wholeheartedly.

A Sound, Reliable and Illuminating Commentary on John

I keep this book on my desk right beside Craig S. Keener's commentaries. Carson writes clearly and succinctly and touches on almost every mystery of the Gospel that concerns me. I think he is completely correct in his criticism of the skeptics. The book is obviously shaped by immense faith and displays great attention to current scholarship and to the details of the text of John. The book also contains a marvelous and forceful summary of the arguments for and against the belief that the Apostle John bar Zebedee wrote the gospel. This is a decisive and brave commentary. Also recommended are all D.A. Carson's other books, including Divine Sovereignty & Human Responsibility. This scholar's output is enormous. It will take me years to catch up with what he has written, and I doubt I'll ever catch up with all of it. I admire him greatly, and recommend him wholeheartedly. --- Addendum added May 16, 2008 as I continue to read this book: There is something commonsensical and firm about the way this author presents his points; he dispatches the objections or contrary theory of others with conviction and an economy of language. Again and again, he appeals simply and unobtrusively to sound judgment as to points over which people argue, and it is refreshing. --- Some scholars today are so hampered by earlier skeptical objections, speculations, and disputes that it is difficult to get through their books. One gets the feeling sometimes that some authors are writing for one another. ---- Not so with D.A. Carson. His writing serves the text and the mainstream reader as well as the scholar. ---- Yet he is ever the Christian (charitable) writer. ---- I sense no snideness or unkindness, but simply a great deal of well earned self confidence, and a straightforward appeal to sound logic. Some readers may find this commentary particularly accessible because of all this. The writing is brisk.

Martin Gitlin is a freelance book writer and journalist based in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to Greenwood's Diana, Princess of Wales, he has written several history books for students, including works on the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case, the Battle of The Little Bighorn and the Stock Market Crash of 1929. He has also written biographies of NASCAR drivers Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. Gitlin worked for two decades as a sportswriter, during which time he won more than 45 awards, including first place for general excellence from Associated Press. That organization also selected him as one of the top four feature writers in Ohio.

About the Author

Recognized internationally for his work in Christianity and culture, Francis A. Schaeffer authored more than twenty books, which have been translated into a score of languages and sold millions worldwide. He and his wife, Edith, founded L'Abri Fellowship international study and discipleship centers. Schaeffer passed away in 1984, but his influence and legacy continue worldwide.

Udo W. Middelmann is president of the Francis A. Schaeffer Foundation. He is a graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary and a longtime worker at Swiss L'Abri. Udo and Debbie Middelmann have five children and three grandchildren.

Wonderful, powerful sermons

Schaeffer never ceases to fail to bring God's word into our hearts. Through these sermons, given at the L'Abri chapel, and throughout Europe, and many other countries, are messages for the twentieth century----and now. With God, there are no little people.

The focus: 1) Humbled leaders----where Schaffer says, "if in any of our relationships of life we demand perfection or nothing, we will have nothing." 2) A personal God 3) Sweeping away modernism to find Gods truth----and he says here, "the Christian must always say, 'I want the state and society to have its proper place. But if it tries to come into the center of my life, I am against it because Jesus only is there'." 4) Workings of the Holy Spirit 5) Humanism 6) Joseph 7) OT tabernacle 8) David----good and bad 9) Elijah/Elisha----great and minor prophet 10) Christ rescuing the three men from the furnace 11) The Christmas story 12) Jesus----centered on Him 13) Christ----the water of life 14) Revelation----in brief 15) The true God, and finally 16) Materialism----where is your treasure----where he discusses the traps that we Christians can fall into, what he calls "practical materialism": "We all tend to live 'ash heap lives'; we spend most of our time and money for things that will end up in the city dump." And, "Let me say with tears that as far as material possessions, time, energy, and talents are concerned, all too many Bible-believing Christians live as though their entire existence is limited to this side of the grave."

16 Sermons That Look at How God Works Through People

"No Little People" is one of the first Kindle freebies I got. I've had it for a while; almost two years. I finally got around to reading it.

Many of the people who have influenced me were in turn influenced by Francis Schaeffer in a previous generation. Unfortunately, Christianity seems to externally manifest in the silly little displays (often verbal) of piety from it's members and adherents. This drives many others to frustration and often away from the church. It keeps people out.

Francis Schaeffer seemed able to cut through all that get to the heart of the matter. He ministered to the generation of the 60's and 70's. Many in that generation credit Schaeffer with bringing them back to what really mattered about the faith. Schaeffer himself was almost driven away from Christianity when he realized how much meanness and infighting happened within his own denomination. What he witnessed in the actions of others contradicted the way the Bible says to act and to serve. As he says in his book "True Spirituality", he went back to his agnosticism and looked at the claims of the Bible through as much of an original lens as possible, unpolluted by his experiences as an ordained minister within a once-great denomination. "True Spirituality" details that journey of his. I'll review that book separately.

The Premise of "No Little People" is "With God, there are no little people!" A statement from the Introduction (written by Udo W. Middelmann) says:

"While all religious and secular standards judge a person by his or her accomplishments toward the end of life, the God of the Bible gives value to the person from the beginning. Man not only becomes someone but is a person from conception on, forever. It matters who you are, not what you have produced, earned, or been noticed for. " -Schaeffer, Francis A. (2003). No Little People (p. 8). Good News Publishers/Crossway Books. Kindle Edition.

This book is a collection of 16 sermons Francis Schaeffer delivered. The back cover of the book indicates they can be used for family devotions.

As Schaeffer was a minister, and this book is a collection of sermons, you can imagine they tend to go on for a while. This is a trend I notice with pastors and writing: they keep going with example after example long after the point was made. With Schaeffer I don't mind so much. He seems to have something to say to fill the space, but at times I felt like I got the point and the chapter just won't end.

The first chapter begins with Moses' staff. That's right. Moses' staff. God used a piece of wood carried by a shepherd for years if not decades in the wilderness. This staff eventually budded in a test of who the true leader was. That's impressive considering this staff could have been more than 60 years old by that point.

The book goes on exploring the lives and roles of other Bible participants, such as Joseph, David, Elijah and Elisha, and Daniel and his three friends. Then in Chapter 11, it becomes a review of the Christmas story, then (at least in my opinion) degenerates into the typical Christian book review of "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so". Schaeffer doesn't treat this material like some pastors and Christian writers I've been exposed to, where after providing some meat, he suddenly assumes he's writing for somebody who has never heard the Gospel and for some reason picked up and read most of a Christian book, so why not go back to Pre-school Sunday School and review the basics? But still, I would have preferred less "I already know this stuff" and more "Let's look at what we know in a new light". I assume the latter is what Schaeffer was going for.

I think this book could be a valuable read for many Christians.
