Third in series

As Donna Fletcher's series about four Highland brothers - Cavan, Artair, Lachlan and Ronan - continues, we focus now on Lachlan. The brothers' search for the missing Ronan continues as a theme through this book, but most of the focus is on Lachlan as he is sent to bring back wayward Alyce Bunnock from a nunnery. When Lachlan arrives at Everagis Abbey where the nuns live he discovers there are only five of them left, the others - including Alyce Bunnock - having died.

Lachlan and his men decide they must stay to protect the nuns from mercenaries whilst they send a message to the church authorities to ask what to do with the few women left. Unfortunately for Lachlan, the more time he spends with Sister Terese, the more he sees her in a rather un-nun-like manner.

Terese knows that she is hiding rather a lot from Lachlan and his men; firstly, that the five women aren't nuns after all, secondly that her identity as Alyce Bunnock needs to be hidden or she will be forced home to wed the man her father requires, and thirdly that she has struck a bargain with the mercenaries, despite not seeing their mysterious leader. But as Lachlan and Terese/Alyce fall in love, he has to learn to trust her and give her freedom and she has to discover whether she can leave Everagis to be with Lachlan.

This book was enjoyable in that the story flowed well and was easy to read. However I found the central 'difficulty' of the plot, the fact that Alyce feared Lachlan wouldn't like her when he discovered she was the shrewish Alyce, very unlikely. In fact, the second half of the book felt more and more unrealistic at times. Alyce's father's behaviour seemed rather erratic too - treating her like a son, then treating her badly - although it appeared necessary for the plot to show how she'd got her leadership skills and yet why she had run away.

This book was an OK read, similar to the previous two in feel, but I felt it lacked a certain something to make it a really good read.

Worth Reading!

The first two books so far in this series have been the best. "Return of the Rogue" with Cavan, and "Under the Highlander's Spell" with Artair (my favorite). I have to agree with one of the other reviewers here that there was something about Alyse that I just didn't like. In this day and age it's easy to understand strong, intelligent women, but maybe not quite so in medieval times, where women were traded like baseball cards and expected to produce sons for heirs. I felt there was something false about Alyse not talking to Lachlan about the mercenaries - especially when she goes to meet one of them, and we discover her basic impulse for doing so is to find out how everyone is doing at Everagis. Sounds like betrayal to me. Five stars though, the writing is good and story is solid. If your looking for a great warrior check out Judy Garwoods "The Prize" - there's something about Royce that gets under your skin.

The Angel and the Highlander

Lachlan Sinclare has been sent by Lord Bunnock to return his daughter to her home. Lady Alyce has decided to avoid marriage and has run away to an abbey. She doesn't want to marry the man her father has chosen for her and would rather assume the persona of Terese, a nun than of Alyce, a wife. Lachlan just wants to return Alyce to her family - he never expected to fall for a beautiful woman of God.

On the blurb for this novel, Alyce is described as shrewish. The blurb was being nice I am sad to say. She was not at all likeable as a character and more than once I just wanted Lachlan to leave her where she stood. Stubborness in a heroine is a great trait, stubbornness to the point that the female lead becomes a pain to read, then enough is enough. Lachlan deserved better.

Donna Fletcher just didn't satisfy my historical romance loving soul with The Angel and the Highlander. I would suggest skipping this book and finding one where the lead characters actually connect.

Don't give up on it--a provocative ending

Reading Brooklyn was an unusual experience. Why? Because I had to read the whole book to appreciate it and be gripped by it. The book was like an embryo--rudimentary, unborn. But when I read the last paragraph, I actually got a spine chill. And, later, after shelving it, my thoughts wandered back to the story with a deeper pleasure.

For the first 100 (or more) pages, nothing much happens. Young provincial Irish girl Eilis Lacey travels to America(circa 1950), leaving her sister and mother in the Irish berg. She improves her education, her appearance, and refines her tastes. With the help of a family friend (a priest), Eilis finds a place to live in a rooming house and a tedious job in a clothing shop. She encounters new friends, (all rather shallow), meets a man, has a courtship. It is all very mundane. When she lies in bed after receiving a letter from home, she actually thinks about her mother or sister taking out the envelope, what kind of envelope, how many envelopes. I was exasperated at that point.

Yet I kept reading. Toibin is a competent writer, and I was at least partially engaged, although I remained skeptical of any interesting story emerging. You know how some authors fail to maintain control over their story and characters? Well, Toibin has perhaps too MUCH control. That is how it seemed as I was reading. It plodded along, but rather lightly. I did like Eilis and cared what happened to her, but I wanted something imaginative or inventive to occur. At least one splashy thing. But when something dramatic happened in the last 100 pages, it didn't really affect me too much. It seemed more of a vehicle for other action to take place, for Eilis to enter into decisive conflict and change.

It is so subtle and restrained that I almost didn't know when I became fully engaged. During the last portion of the book, I was in suspense, wondering what would happen, but speculating that it would be predictable.

Full resolution occurs in the final moments. That last paragraph was a titanic moment for me. It undid all my former expectations with its bittersweet irony and unpredictable ending. My three-star rating went up to four-stars. I finished this quick novel in two sittings, but the impact really begins at the end and continues to foment even after you are finished.

Don't give up on it even though it seems that nothing is happening. The whole is better than the sum of its parts--the end was arresting, even astonishing.

Beautifully written novel about a young Irish immigrant

Brief summary, no spoilers:

There are no explosions in this book. There are no murders, car chases, scenes with international espionage, or anything that would require its movie rendition to have special effects.

Instead, this beautifully written story is about a young girl named Eilis Lacey, who lives with her mother and with her attractive, vivacious sister Rose in a small town in Ireland. The time period is the 1950s. Eilis is smart and good with numbers but there is not much employment opportunity where she lives, so a priest with connections in both Ireland and New York gets her both boarding and a job in Brooklyn.

Needless to say, Eilis has to learn to live in a new culture and away from the only home she's ever known. Everything is so strange and new, but soon she meets a sweet young man named Tony and suddenly she begins to adjust and flourish.

This is the story of a young, immigrant girl learning to deal with change and adversity and how this makes her grow both intellectually and emotionally. It's also about dealing with disparate cultures, and having your heart and soul divided. Just what is "home?"

That this novel is written by a man is truly stunning - because Eilis comes alive from these pages and her thoughts and reactions generally rang true.

I also want to add that I could not stop reading towards the end because I just had to find out how this was all going to be resolved. And let's just say that this would make a very good novel for book clubs - there are going to be lots of different opinions on the denouement.

My only quibbles? I had trouble with the male characters, especially Tony. In many ways he didn't seem real to me, and if anything, too idealized. In many ways I wish this novel had been longer, and the relationships and personalities had been fleshed out more.

This is difficult to say without a spoiler, so I'll be careful not to - but as stunning as the ending is, I'm not sure it felt right to me. But then again, I'm not Eilis, I didn't grow up with her experiences, and maybe that's the whole point. (Hence, part of why this would be a good book for any book clubs.)

But I do highly recommend this book. Colm Toibin is one of my favorite writers, and he just writes beautifully.

3 stars is a stretch

Spare, beautiful writing gives this novel three stars. But the story itself is so lacking in depth, with unrealized characters. Eilis, the protaganist, offers so much potential for the author to plumb the history of the immigrant -- their myriad reasons for coming here, the struggles to make it, the ties to their home country.

Instead, life basically happens to this girl, with no real effort or participation of her own. She doesn't desire to come to America but it's conveniently planned out for her (including a job and home for when she arrives), she doesn't fall in love but rather comes to accept the love of another. I kept waiting for her to grow into and express her own intentions, to make her own decisions, but alas, even the ending is simply an acceptance of circumstances.

There were several tangential characters (sister Rose, the department store manager, the professor) who pique interest. I would have enjoyed learning more about them, and their stories could have elevated this passive, unfulfilling journey.

this is the real story!

after reading Sue Monk Kidd's "The Invention of Wings" I had to find out more about the Grimke sisters and this book was wonderful in providing so much information about the abolition movement and about the strong fight these women put up to try and end slavery and to promote women's rights. This was an absolutely fascinating read; more so than the novel. The true story is more exciting than the fictionalized one.

The Grimke sisters were indeed gutsy; southern born women who rebelled against slavery and took to the northern hustings to make their case. Gerda Lerner has done a splendid job of mapping their story.

Later I found they were not the only ones in the Grimke family to rebel against "that peculiar institution". Mark Perry's book Lift Up Thy Voice, should be a companion piece, because the sisters had two mulatto nephews they helped educate and who also became abolitionists.

I purchased this book because I enjoyed Sue Monk Kidd's fictionalized version of their lives in "The Invention of Wings" that I read with my book club. Much of her information was based on this biography of Sarah and Angelina Grimke by Gerda Lerner. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in these early pioneers of the abolitionist movement, as well as the women's rights movement of the 19th century. They were the shoulders that Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, etc. stood on in fighting for women's rights decades later. Lerner has done an amazing job of thorough research, but the book is not merely a dry recitation of facts. Their story is gripping, and her commentary and analysis of their contributions is insightful and valuable. I was so moved by her work (she was a founder of the field of women's history), that when I finished reading it, I wanted to write to her to tell her so, but sadly I discovered that she died in 2013.

Take one part comedy and one part suspense and shake well-mostly with laughter.

Classic Westlake

Written about 40 years ago this novel could easily be set in the current era. Fred Fitch is the ultimate mark, mark being target for con artists. He is constantly taken advantage of by strangers who can somehow see the word gullible written on his forehead. After years of being taken advantage of Fred is starting to think first before acting, well most of the time. So when he receives a phone call stating he has inherited half a million dollars (over three hundred thousand after tax) from his uncle Matt who he has never even heard of he knows he is being taken for a ride, so calls his friend who is a cop to meet him at the office of the caller. To his surprise the inheritance is genuine but that does not mean the con artists will stop now he has the inheritance. If anything more of them will come out of the woodwork as well as thugs and killers who want the inheritance money, you see his uncle was also a con artist and he stole from some heavyweights in the South America crime scene.

This is another great classic Westlake novel, as is another from that era Killy. Westlake's best novel of the modern era is the Ax, purchase it as well.

Early Westlake a keeper

If you are a fan of Westlake, chances are you will buy this book no matter what the reviews - and good for you. Those who may have stumbled onto this for some reason may want to give this book a chance. If you enjoy a quick mystery/crime novel with a funny slant, especially one with a taste for the times during which it was written (this is a reprint of a very early novel by the author), then you may very well enjoy this book. It is also a great introcuction to a writer who continues his successful run of novels (both humourous and grave) to this date. Well worth checking out.

fine reprint of a 1960s New York joy ride

Copy editor Fred Fitch is so famous as the king of marks, con artists come from everywhere to take him for a buck or three. Grifters visiting New York include Fred as one of their prime tourist stops for no vacation is complete without taking Fred for a ride. Fred is not insane, but he believes in the basic goodness of humanity so that he trusts people until that person rips him off.
Fred is still small potatoes though an important merit badge award for con artists until he inherits over $300,000 from Uncle Matt. Though he never heard of an Uncle Matt, Fred is now a desirable mark beyond honorarium status. Everyone wants a piece of Fred or at least his loot. However, someone wants more than just Fred's inheritance, that individual may have killed Uncle Matt and wants Fred dead too.
Though some of the humor seems a bit dated and even naive, readers can see why this reprint won an Edgar for Best Novel in 1967. The story line combines humor with suspense as Fred is a unique character whose conned from the beginning of the story line in a downtown barbershop to the end of the fun tale. Though the ultimate target, Fred makes GOD SAVE THE MARK works because he is likable and readers will appreciate his trusting nature even though his naiveté is mindful of Einstein's definition of insanity. A new audience will enjoy Donald E. Westlake's 1960s New York joy ride.

About the Author
The author of more than thirty books for adults and young readers, Liz Rosenberg has published three bestselling novels, including The Laws of Gravity and The Moonlight Palace. She has also written five books of poems, among them 2008 s Demon Love, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and After Great Grief, forthcoming from the Provincetown Arts Press. Her poems have been heard on NPR s A Prairie Home Companion. Rosenberg s books for young readers have won numerous awards and honors and have been featured on the PBS television show Reading Rainbow. A former Fulbright Fellowship recipient, Rosenberg teaches English at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where she earned the Chancellor s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She lives in Binghamton with her daughter, Lily, and a shih tzu named Sophie. Although she has homes in New York and North Chatham, Massachusetts, her heart is still in Ireland.

Difficult to Skim

At first, I wanted to skim Liz Rosenberg's book; but as I read, it became impossible for me to skip ahead. I was drawn into every sentence. Eve's grandmother and her daughter are wonderfully painted, with distinct and lovable qualities and I hated to come to the end of the novel. The story has humor, anguish, and tension -- a combination that doesn't often occur successfully in modern literature.

Was great for the daily commute

I had a friend recommend this book to me, so I looked into it as I usually read a book a week while on the train to and from work. It was really entertaining! I actually kept reading it even after getting home, which I rarely do since I read to keep my self entertained on the train and thus try to save the book for that time. I really couldn't put this down though. I'd recommend it to someone who wants a good story that brings them through the everyday mind spinning chaos of life, but at the end leaves them feeling good about being alive and being human (with all our of our own deficiencies and beauty) in this world.

I really enjoyed this and would definitely say it's worth checking out.
