A must-read for a Christian who is troubled by the evolution theories

I'm a Christian.
I'm also science-minded.
In today's world where the scientific community automatically presupposes that God cannot be included in any working theories without judgmental scoffing or worse, those two statements can be hard to coexist. Science started as man trying to understand the world God created, then something changed. Currently science automatically throws out any evidence or concept that might point to a Creator. As a result, there is little exposure to Christian worldview interpretation of the evidence in the science world, and so much aligns with a Creationist theory. This book provides that interpretation with regards to the origins of life on our planet from a former evolutionist, in most places showing the thought processes on both or multiple sides of the current debates. Far from being exhaustive, it covers the bases very well, providing Christian perspective and argument that has been effectively boycotted from the science community. I feel I need to dig a little more on the Carbon-14 issue. Maybe I was overly tired when I went through that section, but I didn't come away overly satisfied on that specific topic, but further reference is provided there on which to chew. All other areas were eye opening as to how much evidence has been shown to now align with a biblical account. As a Christian, hungry for a scientific Christian perspective missing in today's culture, this book read like a good novel.

I have finished reading this very good book.. Mr. Parker was once an evolutionist. But in setting out to prove it he found the truth. It is amazing how Good works in our lives if we are open minded. Truth can come right out and bite you. If more would truly examine that evidence they too would be enlightened. The fact we do have billions of dead things buried in rock layers layed down by water all over the earth should be quiet convincing!! I challenge any and all who believe that something came from nothing to set out to really prove it by facts...obviously "nothing comes from nothing,nothing ever could"

Very Informative...

This book is very interesting. I've always enjoyed trying to understand what my dreams are about. They are actually meant to tell you about your present or past life. I have also been very interested by Sigmund Freud and his points. I thought it was a really interesting book and I think you will to. I did get this product for a free or discounted price in return for my review. You have to be in to certain things and the mind to be able to enjoy this, but I do highly recommend that you give it a chance, you could get lost in the interesting information and learn new things about yourself.

This is an academic book for the the lay person or those with a professional interest in the unconcious. It's challenging but fascinating and there's stacks of information if writing a psychological thriller.

Highly recommended and something all serious people should have on their shelf. Freud is after all one of the great minds of the 20th century. .

by the ever-turgid Strachey, who loves medical metaphors and Latinized phrasings more than Freud loved literary clarity; but aside from that, THE classic of psychoanalysis, and the first (and, for Freud, the favorite) of Freud's great works.
One can imagine that modern dream research would have interested Freud as much as its reductionist speculations would have amused him. Certainly he'd never have argued that because a patient's stomach hurt during a painful recital of an early memory, this indigestible piece of emotional trauma was "caused" by the gastronomic rejection of a burnt piece of toast eaten just before the session. OF COURSE psychical activity has a physical substrate. And, perhaps, vice versa. What he'd have wanted to know was: in what psychological situation was all this embedded?
One can't help but admire the boldness and honesty with which Freud presented his own dreams and associations. We might speculate in hindsight that Irma, the partially cured patient whom Freud tried to talk out of her hysteria, showed up in his dream with throat and stomach symptoms and an illness caused by a bad injection to protest the way he injected women with his sex-etiology theories, thereby in effect silencing their true voice; and smile at Freud's dream of an orator named Lecher, a dream he had shortly after accepting a position in which he did a lot of public speaking about psychology.
But that we can speculate thus we owe largely to the techniques inspired by Freud himself. He was often wrong, but the spirit of his endeavor lives on.

Competing in a shrinking world

I'd forgotten the pleasure reading good prose brings. Friedman not only writes well, but does so on an important subject- globalization. He states, "It is now possible for more people than ever to collaborate and compete in real time with more people on more different kinds of work from more different corners of the planet and on a more equal footing than at any previous time in the history of the world."

He claims, "When the world is flat, you can innovate without having to emigrate". But, how did the world `become flat'? Friedman suggest the trigger events were the collapse of communism, the dot-com bubble resulting in overinvestment in fiber-optic telecommunications, and the subsequent out-sourcing of engineers enlisted to fix the perceived Y2K problem.

Those events created an environment where products, services, and labor are cheaper. However, the West is now losing its strong-hold on economic dominance. Depending on if viewed from the eyes of a consumer or a producer - that's either good or bad, or a combination of both.

What is more sobering is Friedman's elaboration on Bill Gates' statement, "When I compare our high schools to what I see when I'm traveling abroad, I am terrified for our work force of tomorrow. In math and science, our fourth graders are among the top students in the world. By eighth grade, they're in the middle of the pack. By 12th grade, U.S. students are scoring near the bottom of all industrialized nations. . . . The percentage of a population with a college degree is important, but so are sheer numbers. In 2001, India graduated almost a million more students from college than the United States did. China graduates twice as many students with bachelor's degrees as the U.S., and they have six times as many graduates majoring in engineering. In the international competition to have the biggest and best supply of knowledge workers, America is falling behind."

Friedman sounds the alarm with a call for diligence and fortitude - academically, politically, and economically. He sees a dangerous complacency, from Washington down through the public school system. Students are no longer motivated. "In China today, Bill Gates is Britney Spears. In America today, Britney Spears is Britney Spears -- and that is our problem."

Questions I wish Friedman had explored in further detail are:

1. When should countries do what benefits the global economy, and when should they look out for their own interests? (protectionism, tariffs, quotas, etc.)

2. What will a `flat world' mean to the world's poor? (those living in Haiti, Angola, Kazakhstan, etc.)

3. What cultural values (or absence thereof) are contributing to the West's loss of productivity, education, and excellence? (morality, truth, religion, meaning, hope?)

4. How will further globalization effect cultural distinctions? (Are we heading towards a universal melting pot?)

5. What will a `flat world' mean environmentally - particularly for those countries on the verge of an economic explosion?

Good read for those who have not followed the world's technological transformation

The first chapter of this book is tellingly called "While I Was Sleeping". If you, too, were sleeping over the past decade in terms of following information technology and global business trends, this is a good read for you.

If you were "awake" during this period and you are looking for a good recap of what happened, stuffed with lots of anecdotes, then you might like this book, too.

But if you are looking for an indepth look at where we stand and where we are about to go, then this book is too superficial and not scientific enough. In general terms, this book is not very precise in many instances and even inaccurate with regard to some details. The author uses a lot of comparisons, metaphores and catchphrases, and many of these are either used inaccurately or they are not coherent. The editor has also done a pretty poor job of finding all the typos and the words that are not in the right place.

To his credit, the author is full of enthusiasm, relating a host of personal stories. His exploratory method paired with long, yet simple explanations make this book the right one for those who have a hard time absorbing the issue of the incredible technological break-throughs we have witnessed over the last few years, the ensuing integration of the global work flow and its implications for the current and the future business worlds.

Friedman misses some criticisms

In general this is a well written summary of a new world of individuals able to connect and interract with each other in new and exciting ways, but I didn't see any consideration made for criticism. For example, Friedman lauds Walmart's price-chopping prowess, but the truth is you can save as much at Costco, which oddly enough is a union shop (very "last century"). Friedman lauds outsourced tax return processing but doesn't really touch identity theft. Do you really know who is looking at your return? Friedman lauds the internet but fails to mention the huge amount of time employees all over the US spend shopping online, playing fantasy football, etc. Friedman lauds UPS repairing laptops in their hangars, but fails to mention if customers are any happier or even if the service is any good. While the "flat" world eliminates some antiquated barriers, there is as great a danger of this new society turning into a hyper-capitalist slave state where the few holding truly liquid capital have ownership of society's agenda. I wasn't convinced that Friedman was really interested in questioning his own thesis.
