Good. Could use some polish.

I got off to a rocky start with the Flex 3 Cookbook. Many of the recipes would be well suited for someone who is just beginning to develop in Flex. If you're a beginner, that's a good thing; if you're a more advanced user (one who has progressed beyond using states and doing your layouts in the designer) it might be a bit of a turn off.

Fortunately there are enough advanced recipes scattered throughout the book (in greater and greater density as you move to later chapters) to keep your interest. Chapters 17, 18 and 19 were my favorites (Browser Communication; Modules and RSL; and AIR, respectively).

My only real criticism of the book is that it bears many of the signs of being rushed to market (i.e. typos, unpolished code). I expect that on a blog, but find it detracting in a book.

There are a handful of recipes I'm surprised made it past the editors, '4.3 Create a Suggestive TextInput' being the worst. Not only is the output terrible, but there's a variable in the code that was undoubtedly part of a previous draft of the recipe, but is not used in the recipe printed in the book. Any developer can appreciate the need to get to market quickly, unfortunately it's not as easy to change a printed volume as it is to change source code.

I would have been happier, and probably given the book 5 stars, if the title had been pushed back another month and greater attention paid to details like these. Overall, I got enough information from the book to make it worth every star I gave it and every dollar I paid for it.

Missing important chapters

I would have given this book 5 stars after 2 days of reading except that they should have waited to include at least 3 of the 4 missing chapters. Printing the .pdf's isn't too professional. I would have waited another week or two to include these in the text.

You've Got Questions, Here are the Answers

In my progression as a budding Flex developer I have reached the point where I'm passed the "getting started" tutorials but still not a master of anything with the language. My questions have from general concepts to the much more specific. This book is perfectly tailored to provide the answers I needed.

The format of the publication is set up nicely as it states a problem and then explains a solution. The way I usually judge a book's worth is to attack it with a specific question in mind, and then see how well it helps me solve the problem. The Flex 3 Cookbook passed with flying colors.

I needed some help wrapping my mind around manipulating data in an ArrayCollection. Section 13.1 called 'Add, Sort, and Retrieve Data from an ArrayCollection' guided me to a much better understanding of ArrayCollections. My question was answered, although there was a typo in the example code, hence the 4-star rating rather than 5.

Among these are the theories that fairies were a reclusive race of dwarfs, that they are disembodied spirits, or that they are a figment of our imaginations. Evans-Wentz concludes that they may indeed be a manifestation of inhabitants of a higher reality that only some of us are able to view, let alone understand.

We come away from this study with a multi-dimensional view of the fairies, who, much like the grey aliens of UFO belief, inhabit a narrative which seems too consistent to be the product of insanity, yet too bizarre for conventional explanation.--J.B. Hare

What are fairies, those romantic and sometimes mischievous little people-- pixies, nixies, elves, fauns, brownies, dwarfs, leprechauns, and all the other forms of the daoine sidhe (fairy people)? Are they real? Folklorists say they are fragments of ancient religious beliefs; occultists call them nature spirits; the peasant tradition says they are fallen angels who were not good enough to be saved or bad enough to be lost.

Dr. Evans-Wentz is best known as the author-translator of "The Tibetan Book of the Dead", but his first love was this book, which presents a body of tradition and testimony about an elusive order of life that survives in the natural setting of wild and lonely places. He was not satisfied with merely formal study, but collected first-hand reports of fairies in Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Brittany, and faced up to the key questions avoided by other folklorists. Dr. Evans-Wentz, whose journeys led him from the haunts of fairyland to the wilderness of Tibet, opens a path for us to the luminous reality behind the traditions of folklore.

W. Y. Evans-Wentz, an anthropologist, had interest in exploring the religious experience of mankind. His famous books in the present series include Tibetion Yoga and Secret Doctrines; The Tibetan Book of the Dead; and Tibet's Great Yogi Milarepa. Evans-Wentz firmly believed that humanity is one family, eternally transcending geographical demarcations, national limitations, and every fettering concept born of the unenlightened mind.

TERRY EVANS was born in Texas, not far from the border with Mexico. He was seen on "Dallas", the Showtime movie "Lone Star Bar and Grill, The Jesse Owens Story, " and other productions. He now lives in Los Angeles.

not much to add

There is no book on this subject I have found that equals it.
This is a testament in itself, as this was first published around 1890.
Wentz was an academic, a scholar, yet in early chapters his descriptions of each area of the Isles is breathtaking. It's not dry, it's not stuffy. He spent years collecting encounters, traditions, and beliefs from the most correct source. The people themselves. This contrasts rightfully the tendancy (even more so these days with anything Celtic especially) to project things onto a culture it does not contain. No frilly, watered down, ... little creatures at your beck and call here, which is what other "authors" would have you believe.
For some, the latter chapters of this book will seem a bit dry compared to the first. Regardless of what you think of his theories, they are all intriguing, and well thought out by the author, though I agree he became a bit enchanted himself during the writing. (not a bad thing, IMO, I was enchanted as well) The collection of tales alone is worth the price. I enjoyed every page.
This should be on the shelf of anyone who says they want to learn about Faeries, Celts, and the cultures they came from.
Why read what any old outsider says? Read the words of the people who were born and raised in these cultures. They know themselves better than anyone else, no?

Celtic Fairy Faith

This book provides insight into the psyche of the Celtic people during the early 1900s. It shares mostly stories but also experiences that were passed along word of mouth by many people in their nineties. The similarities of the stories in various parts of the Celtic world offered a view of the times, how they saw sickness, illness and even death of family members, friends or domesticated animals by explaining the cause as fairy activity. The belief in the unseen world of fairies and its "Fairy Faith" was changing with the times. Religion, education and industrialization were suggested as some of the causes for a lack of belief in fairies as well as for the reasons fairies were not as popular or numerous in numbers as in earlier centuries.

What is a complete set? Amazon should put this information in the product description.

The company would send people 10-12 cards at a time (not in order) and the customer would pay $7.99 + shipping etc.. every three weeks. Therefore, there are a lot of these sets floating around but they are usually incomplete. I do understand however that the sellers may not know the details of how this worked so may not realize their sets are incomplete.
A complete set of cards consists of the following. There 1094 cards not including the binders, indexes and dividers. Set will be 7-8 binders total if all of the cards are collected. Card numbers are in the top right corner of each card.

It would be great if the seller would give detailed information as to the contents. I took a chance in buying this. Although it contained many of the cards that I did not have, there were many cards that I already had in my collection. None of the other sellers provided detailed information either. I can only assume that if they are charging $27.00, then there is not much available in the offering. I guess I'll have to check E-Bay or with the publisher to find the other cards in their entirety.

There is a Lot of usual information on these cards. The packaging was clean and the delivery timely.

About the Author

Jeremy Zawodny and his two cats moved from Northwest Ohio to Silicon Valley in late 1999 so he could work for Yahoo!--just in time to witness the .com bubble bursting first-hand. He's been at Yahoo!® ever since, helping to put MySQL and other Open Source technologies to use in fun, interesting, and often very big ways. Starting with the popular and high-traffic Yahoo! Finance site, he worked to make MySQL part of the site's core infrastructure in large batch operations as well as real-time feed processing and serving content directly on the site. He then helped to spread "the MySQL religion" to numerous other groups within Yahoo!, including News, Personals, Sports, and Shopping. Nowadays he acts as Yahoo!'s MySQL guru, working with Yahoo!'s many engineering groups to get the most out of their MySQL deployments.

In 2000, he began writing for Linux Magazine and continues to do so today as a columnist and contributing editor. After over a year of active participation on the MySQL mailing list, he got the idea to write a book about MySQL. (How hard could it be, really?) You can still find him answering questions on the list today. Since 2001, Jeremy has been speaking about MySQL at various conferences (O'Reilly's Open Source Conference, PHPCon, The MySQL User Conference, etc.) and user groups in locations as far away as Bangalore, India. Well explained MySQL concepts

As an Oracle DBA, I was looking for a book that can help me better understand MySQL core concepts and differences compared to my primary working platform. I was looking for a book with the flavor of Oracle Concepts Manual. I partially read official MySQL reference manual but didn't find (get?) all the answers (nor I really enjoyed reading it - sorry AB doc. team!).
I think this book filled my knowledge gap on MySQL perfectly. Actually, this book could easily bear different title, such as "MySQL concepts guide" or something like that. You'll probably read the book in a couple of days, thanks to the author's clear writing style.
Let me give you an example. Some technical topics are difficult to explain in a few sentences, like the one on letter I (Isolation) from ACID rules for 'safe' transactions. Just compare the explanation on "phantom reads" from this book with the one you'll find in Oracle Concepts Manual (freely available on-line from OTN). Now, which one did you understand on the first pass? ;-)
Thanks to clear and short explanations, right from the beginning of the book, I learned some important technical facts about MySQL that I could easily put in perspective with my Oracle background. For example:
-"All InnoDB tables have primary keys"
-"InnoDB tables are similar to Oracle index-organized tables."
-"MySQL will only ever use one index per table per query!"
-"MySQL doesn't cache rows for MyISAM tables, only indexes...as opposed to InnoDB"
-"...counts are very fast on MyISAM tables and slow on InnoDB tables..."
Obviously the chapters that I liked the most in this book are the ones that covers core things very well:
"2. Storage Engines",
"4. Indexes",
"5. Query Performance" and
"10. Security".
All other chapters are fine but not essential for my current use of MySQL (like the excellent chapter on replication where it's obvious that Jeremy poses vast practical experience with replication from his workplace at Yahoo!).
The only complaint that I have is the one on "Storage Engines" chapter. In my opinion multi storage engine architecture is the most important advantage of MySQL over all other database vendors
products. I wish author's went a little deeper with the details (and thanks but no thanks, I don't want to read source code ;-), especially InnoDB engine is not covered enough (hmm...or maybe it's just me, after all :-).
Overall this book is highly recommended to all DBAs, the existing MySQL DBAs as well as to all others that work with other RDBMS and want a fast way to pick the most important technical nuances of MySQL.

Make MySQL efficient

While the authors go over the basics of MySQL briefly in the first couple of chapters this is not a book for the new MySQL administrator. It assumes a good deal of basic knowledge about MySQL. On the other hand, if you know the basics and need to get that extra knowledge to move your system from one that just works to one that truly performs then this book is for you. From the initial steps of benchmarking your system and tweaking the indexes the book moves on to improving your performance through optimizing queries and server performance tuning. This includes examining all aspects of your system from disk and file system selection to minor configuration changes that may make great changes in performance. Once the server is working at its optimum for your needs the book turns to how to scale your SQL system up to multiple servers and configure replication, load balancing, and high availability systems. The main text of the book ends with a section on backup, recovery, and security. If you need performance, reliability and security beyond the standard configuration and need to maximize throughput this is the book you will want to have at hand. "High Performance MySQL" is one of the best optimization and performance books available for the intermediate to advanced user of MySQL - very highly recommended.

Good book overall, but may grow obsolete to MySQL5.

I mainly bought this book so that I could get some insight into 'advanced' Storage and Replication techniques w/ MySQL.

Jeremy provided some pretty detailed and easy to understand examples, with decently comprehensive descriptions which did help answer some of the questions I had.

I'd suggest this book to anyone who wants to understand the principles of Storage and Replication techniques in MySQL4. This book is definitely a kick in the right direction, but does not take you too far, so I'd say this is for intermediate users.

MySQL5 has many new storage and replication features not mentioned in this book, some of which resolve a lot of the 'problematic' storage and replication issues that this book discusses, thus making SOME of the content irrelevant (or obsolete) to MySQL5. However, the overall principles remain the same, and can be applied to either version.

If you're using MySQL4, then this book is for you!

If you're using MySQL5, you may want to wait for a revised edition of this book.

I sure hope Jeremy is working on a revised version for MySQL5! *hint*hint* =)
