As the author himself wrote in his Afterword to "Unthinkable," "In this story, an attempt has been made to depict [laws of nature that] conflict with human mentality. It is not the ordinary science fiction attempt. It is not new laws working in harmony with old, or new discoveries that fit into the old pattern. It is, if you please, an utterly alien bit of reality in conflict with the old. You won't like it at all--unless you have the type of mind that can reach a little way beyond experience. And though what you may 'see' may have no counterpart in all reality, if this story serves to expand your mental horizons, it has at least found an excuse for being written." No wonder the Encyclopedia says Rog Phillips stories "did much to raise the standards" of the sf of his time, and Multiple Hugo and Nebula Award winner Robert Silverberg, who as a young man admired Phillips work very much, wrote that Philips is "the master of a new type of sf writing." A Really Good-Bad Science Fiction Book

Everybody knows about good-bad books -- books that really aren't good except that you enjoyed them anyway. There are no good-bad books like old good-bad SF books. Rog Phillips' "Incomprehensible" is about an Earth suffering under an invasion of aliens whose thoughts are so different from ours they are incomprehensible. It consists mostly of lectures -- literally, lectures by professors to their students -- on the question, what would make an alien logic incomprehensible to us, and how can we work around that to understand these aliens enough to throw them off the planet? If that makes you think, "Eww! I'd rather chew tinfoil!", then trust me that this book is not for you. If it makes you wonder, "How could you learn to understand what is un-understandable?", then you are an old-school SF fan and you will like this.

What I'm trying to say is that this book has two novellas focused on the metaphysical question, "What is reality?". People who enjoy this sort of thing, to borrow a phrase, will find this to be the sort of thing they enjoy. Personally, I liked it a lot.

This book makes some very hard to understand physics easier to understand by sugar coating it in ScFi

This book is really dealing in both quantum and field theory all of which existed when this book was written over 50 years ago but were not well known and mostly rejected. Not only is this book enjoyable but it is dealing with real hard science that is still advanced and hard to understand today. A must read.

Paradoxes in Perception

Two short works by a classic sci fi writer of the 40s and 50s. Each deals with paradoxes in perception and are quite enjoyable to read. "Unthinkable", as well as several of Phillips' novels, are available for free on Gutenberg, and the two stories together are available for Kindle under this title, free at the time of this review (2015).
