entirely adequate -- useful even -- level headed

Real World Web Services starts with a recitation of the history of the internet, then

discuses some of the web service offerings currently available, including Java code

for programming remote procdure calls to them, then concludes with a short visionary

chapter in which the author relaxes his prohibition against opinionating and speculating.

The discussion of N-tier architecture, and the checklist of things to be careful about,

when considering deployment of a web service, and the nod to capitalist realities -- if

you don't have a business plan, you're just playing around, not like that's bad or anything,

but the angels aren't going to kidnap you and issue you your very own beach house -- are

most useful, and come from a solid perpective.

How do you choose between raw CGI, SOAP, REST, binary, and XML? What are

the good points and drawbacks of each? Real World Web Services discusses these

generalities. Is UDDI worth the trouble when WDSL already comes with commercial

SOAP development tools? Real world web services will tell you, probably not.

As a developer of web services since before the term had been coined, I tend to

use the traditional Comman Gateway Interface key/value pairs data declaration

method for passing data to my web services rather than XML. Iverson touches on

this legacy method, in a box, on page 99, while discussing PayPal's Instant Payment

Notification system: "Using a simple HTTP request/response is perhaps the most basic,

universal web service. It works with virtually every programming language and requires no

special configuration to use. It's a classic case of the simple solution being the best

solution."

There is no further discussion of simple HTTP request/response, also known as

"common gateway interface." Perhaps he wishes to discourage reinventing too

many wheels, when the available ones (SOAP) take care of a mess of details.

I suppose the plentiful Java example code will be welcome to fans of Iverson's previous

books on Jakarta and J2EE

Great bridge from theory to practical...

Since Domino 7 will start to incorporate web services more readily into application development, I figured it was time to start getting a little more versed on the subject. To that end, I got a copy of Real World Web Services by Will Iverson (O'Reilly). Coupled with a detailed tutorial/reference manual, this is a really good selection.

Chapter List: Web Service Evolution; Foundations of Web Services; Development Platform; Project 1: Competitive Analysis; Project 2: Auctions and Shipping; Project 3: Billing and Faxing; Project 4: Syndicated Search; Project 5: News Aggregator; Project 6: Audio CD Catalog; Project 7: Hot News Sheet; Project 8: Automatic Daily Discussions; Future Web Service Directions; Index

While the book is smallish (206 pages), there's a lot of value packed in it. Iverson takes you from the beginning of simple HTTP request and responses, through data scrapping, into RPC technology, and then finally into web services. The overview really helps you to understand how we got to where we are. He explains how to set up a simple test development environment as well as what you'll need, and then it's directly into the example projects. Here's where the book shines. These projects connect to live data sources such as Amazon, Google, FedEx, and eBay, so you're not dealing with simple examples that don't translate to the real world. Each of the projects are applications that you could easily see yourself using on a daily basis, either exactly as written or with some moderate tweaking. And since you're learning the mechanics of connecting with that service, it's easy to extrapolate the information into the areas that might interest you more.

If you have no background in SOAP or WSDL, I'd recommend you get a foundational book that has a good tutorial and reference material. You won't get it from this book, nor should you expect to. It's not his intended purpose for the book. But this is the book that will help you go from theoretical to practical, and that's worth its weight in gold.

Nicely done, excellent code examples

I think the book will appeal to two groups. Those people who want to use a web service from a company described in the book and people who are interested in learning about some real world applications using web services. The number of companies discussed are few, but they are the big players. I liked the discussion of web services in general and how they can be (and are) used in real world applications.

This book shows you - with copious amounts of code - how to use various services provided by real companies right away. For me, this book was a great way to gather ideas about different approaches to provide and interact with web services. It does a great job at proving how simple web services really are.

Although web services are not language-specific, the book and all the examples are in Java. You should be pretty comfortable with Java, Tomcat, and similar technologies to be able to get the examples working. The companies/web services discussed are: Amazon, eBay, Google, FedEx, PayPal, CDDB. It also discusses interacting with bloggers.

Hemingway's Final Masterpiece

Hemingway's writing was always very auto-biographical, but in A Moveable Feast, published after his lifetime and written late in Hem's life, he actually uses real character names in recreating Paris of the 1920's. For any Hemingway fan, or for those interested in first hand accounts of life with Gertrude Stein, Alice Toklas, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce and others, this is truly a must read.
The book is everything that most late fiction by Hemingway is not. It is lean, romantic, and genuine, without the blustery heroes and stilted dialogue of missed efforts like the dreadful Across the River and Into the Trees.
Here Hemingway looks back fondly on his days with Hadley in Paris, slipping into cafes to sit all day and attempt to write over a cup of coffee. He remembers trips to the racetrack, a hysterical road trip adventure with Fitzgerald to retrieve a car, and other memorable details from the lives of the Lost Generation living abroad. He also takes shots at some so-called friends who turned on him, not passing up on an opportunity to get in the last word. There is some doubt as to whether Hemingway ever wanted this book published, but I am very glad that they did. It is a book to cherish and come back to every couple of years, and it had aged better than anything else Hemingway had written.

Atrocious typography just kills a great book

This review is not about the work by Hemingway. This is great book.

The same cannot be said about what I will call the typography. Or rather
the lack of it. The text is essentially a raw scan of a paper edition with
many, much too many, mistyped words and many more false new
paragraphs created, most of them in mid-sentence.

In short we have here an atrocious text rendering making for a labored reading.

Please correct this Kindle book and reissue it to all buyers.

Hemingway Memoir Still Charms Us

This is Hemingway's last book, posthumously published, a memoir from the 20s in Paris, a work he promised himself many years before his death. The early period of his writing career in Paris is described, when he was living with his first wife Hadley and spending time with Gertrude Stein and especially Scott Fitzgerald. The young family had almost no money, but somehow eked out enough for him to prosper, struggling in Paris cafes, learning to write stories and his first novel, and even enjoying a skiing vacation in Austria (the couple was very athletic). Needless to say no one can live like they did in Paris these days! But the magic is still there in the City of Light (plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose). A good read with many charming moments. Paris is a moveable feast; once you have loved her, you carry her with you forever.

As a HUGE Cussler fan, I've spent what seems like years in a mode of 'waiting 'til his next book came out'...and then something strange happened: he began writing different series. And then it became clear after a bit that all of the co-authors were the ACTUAL writers, to which Clive came up with story outlines and had the co-author actually pen the novels. At first Paul Kemprecos was brilliant--and by that I mean he mirrored Cussler's style and more importantly his *formula* to a Tee. Take ANY of the first 4 NUMA Files novels and exchange Kurt with Dirk, and Joe with Al and voila! you have a regular Dirk Pitt story.

Beginning with 'The Navigator' I noticed a distinct lack of...well, I can't exactly put my finger on it, and THAT kinda drives me a bit nuts to be honest. Something about that book just didn't GRAB me like a normal NUMA Files book usually does. Wish I could be more specific, but I just can't. With 'Medusa' that trend has continued--albeit I have to say I enjoyed it better than 'Navigator'.

As usual, Dirk--uh, I mean Kurt and Co. are in the right place at the right time to avert one disaster, only to get caught up in another, larger global far-reaching disaster much bigger than originally thought. This is the typical Cussler *formula* that has served him so well over the years. Maybe, just MAYBE I'm growing tired of the predictability of it all...? I don't know for certain. I DO plan on buying the next Cussler/Kemprecos NUMA Files book, but I cannot say how long I can be carried along with this same tried-but-true *formula* which unfortunately seems to have seen better days...unlike Kemprecos who tries to mimic Cussler's style, Jack Du Brul who pens the Oregon Files novels doesn't try to write LIKE Cussler at all. He has his own style and you can TELL. The novels seem fresh and entirely different, but at the same time, JUST as exciting and worthwhile.

Time will tell if this trend continues, or whether I'll keep buying or not.

First actual review- just a generic thriller

I've been a huge fan of Cussler's work for about two decades now. Sadly, the books written "with" other authors (for "by" values of "with") don't live up to his standards. Medusa isn't the worst book I've read in the last year, but I can't bring myself to call it anywhere near good. The plot is a fairly generic "super virus must be stopped!" bit shoehorned into the maritime environment the NUMA heroes live in. There's pretty much no character development, and the "supporting cast" barely does anything. The research is inexcusably bad - stuff that ninety seconds with Google would catch. There's none of the pulpy / campy charm of the Dirk Pitt novels.

If it weren't for Cussler whoring his name out it would probably never be published. As it is, he should be embarrassed to have his name on the cover.

NUMA Saves The World Again

Having lived in Arizona I have had the pleasure of meeting Clive Cussler at several book signings. Having made that statement I can truly say that I have never picked up one of his works of fiction and said to myself, "Wow, Cussler has a Pulitzer coming his way." On the other hand I've gotten a smattering of education, and I do mean smattering about oceanography and history. Like Clive's other novels, "Medusa" has a formula: bad guys want to take over the world and good guys with NUMA capes come along to stop them. Each chapter is essentially an old time Saturday matinee at the movies cliffhanger. In the end the good guys win just as we want them to do. Just go with the flow and you'll find "Medusa" an enjoyable read.
