Great, As Far as it Went... BUT...

The real issues that I have with this edition is that, in a couple of cases, the stories are woefully incomplete. Subspace Survivors is missing the entire second half of the story, and Vortex Blasters is missing the last 18!! chapters of the book (published as "Masters of the Vortex"). Also, the typos - this was obviously an OCR product, with GLARING transcription errors - in one story, closing single quotes were all replaced by the number 1. This could have been so much better.

I have enjoyed the book as is the case with all of "Doc" Smith's books which i have been reading for 30 years. My only problem is that there are too many mistakes in these editions and one is left at times to figure out the meaning of some text

EE Doc Smith. Space opera. 'Nuff said

EE Doc Smith might not appeal to all modern tastes, but, if you can allow yourself to drift back to those thrilling days of yesteryear and look at this with the kind of eyes that viewed this material in the run-up to the Golden age of science fiction, they are lively, wonderful fun.
This is definitely space opera and it is definitely written from the point of view of a man of his era. That said, he was a remarkable man for his time and his own predilections to be a polymath inform his tremendously competent heroes (and even a few of his dastardly yet admirabl Space poundvillains)!
'Spacehounds of the IPC' is the best work here. 'The Galaxy Primes' is where doctors clearly struggling to adapt to the evolving and more mature science fiction of the 1960s and, although not entirely successful, still manages to bring some magic here and there.
At the time of the writing of this review, only those of his works which have lapsed into the public domain are available on Kindle. I would love to see reproductions of the Fiction House and pulp text and illustrations made available. Here's hoping.
So, return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear when space opera was being invented in large part by the amazing Doc Smith… :)
