Often overlooked gem

The main fault of The Unforgiven is that it happened to be written by the same author as The Searchers ( the basis for the classic John Ford / John Wayne western film.)
On the surface the two stories are similar, but this does not detract from the quality of both novels. In fact The Unforgiven is a mirror image of The Searchers. In one a white child is stolen by Indians, in the other an Indian child is stolen by whites.
Both books are well researched, realistic historical novels with both sides of the conflict shown in a fair if not sympathetic light. The Indians are presented as people, neither savage barbarians nor dreamy nature lovers. The conflict is a clash of incompatable cultures, both sides believing in the rightness of their actions.
As with The Searchers, the theme of The Unforgiven is racial hatred and the consequences of the violence it causes.
Alan LeMay was a prolific writer of screenplays and western novels. Unfortunately, he has been relegated to the ranks of the so-called "pulp western" writers, which is a pity because the man could flat write. The Unforgiven and The Searchers compare favorably with anything written by Larry McMurtry or Cormac McCarthy, and in some cases are better.
For the film buff, The Unforgiven was also made into a fine film. Directed by John Huston, it starred Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn and Audie Murphy and is well worth watching.
