ONE OF THE GREAT "HISTORICAL" WORKS OF LITERATURE
By Steven H Propp
The Epic of Gilgamesh is a poem from Mesopotamia, and one of the earliest surviving works of literature. It tells the story of the friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu, and their travels, until the gods sentence Enkidu to death. Gilgamesh sets out on a quest to learn the secret of eternal life; he also recounts the story of one of the earliest Flood accounts.
The account begins, "When the gods created Gilgamesh they gave him a perfect body... Two thirds they made him god and one third man." (Pg. 59) Gilgamesh said to Enkidu, "Where is the man who can clamber to heaven? Only the gods live for ever with glorious Shamash [a god], but as for us men, our days are numbered, our occupations are a breath of wind." (Pg. 69)
When Enkidu is laying ill, Shamash hears his angry words, and says, "Enkidu, why are you cursing the woman, the mistress who taught you to eat bread fit for gods and drink wine of kings?" (Pg. 88) After Enkidu's death, Gilgamesh "wandered ... in search of Utnapishtim, whom the gods took after the deluge... and to him alone of men they gave everlasting life." (Pg. 94) A female maker of wine tells him, "When the gods created man they allotted to him death, but life they retained in their own keeping... Let your clothes be fresh, bathe yourself in water, cherish the little child that holds your hand, and make your wife happy in your embrace; for this too is the lot of man." (Pg. 99)
Upon finding Utnapishtim, he is told, "There is no permanence. Do we build a house to stand for ever, do we seal a contract to hold for all time?... The sleeping and the dead, how alike they are, they are like a painted death... (The gods) decree the fates of men. Life and death they allot but the day of death they do not disclose." (Pg. 104)
Utnapishtim then tells the story of the Flood: "Enlil heard the clamour and said to the gods in council, 'The uproar of mankind is intolerable and sleep is no longer possible by reason of the babel.' So the gods in their hearts were moved to let loose the deluge; but my lord Ea warned me in a dream... 'Tear down your house, I say, and build a boat. These are the measurements... then take up into the boat the seed of all living creatures.'... [Gilgamesh says] I loaded into [the boat] all that I had of gold and of living things, my family, my kin, the beasts of the field both wild and tame, and all the craftsmen... For six days and six nights the winds blew. torrent and tempest overwhelmed the world... When the seventh day dawned the storm from the south subsided... I loosed a raven, she saw that the waters had retreated, she ate, she flew around, she cawed, and she did not come back. Then I threw everything open to the four winds, I made a sacrifice and poured out a libation on the mountain top... When the gods smelled the sweet savour, they gathered like flies over the sacrifice..." (Pg. 105-108)
This epic is essential reading for persons interested in myth, ancient history, literature, and religious origins.
