FANTASTIC IDEA...Publishing screenplays and filming diaries!

Emma Thompson has hit on a goldmine! I wish now I could buy a copy of the screenplays of ALL my favorite movies with diaries full of behind-the-scenes secrets! Fantastic job, Emma! The diary is hysterical and now I enjoy watching the movie again with a new perspective--an insider's perspective. But Emma didn't say how the scene came about where Fanny flips out with Lucy's news of her engagement to Edward. That was a riot and not in the script--who thought it up?!!

Sense and Sensibility Diaries

This is a wonderful read for anyone that loves this movie. It is a behind the scene look at the making of the movie by Emma Thompson. She includes many humorous stories involving the different actors that were in the movie.

"This is a Nation of Fannys!" - Ang Lee during the casting of Fanny Dashwood

When Ang Lee and Emma Thompson delivered in 1995 their adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, they also published this wonderful book. A compilation of the movie's script with its production diaries. For the former, the opportunity to see the differences between the shooting script and the final product; for scriptwriting classes to know and understand the technicality of writing a script and how stuff on paper can or cannot be transferred on screen. For the latter, the occasion to see Emma's perspective on the movie's production. Its many ups and few downs. Incidents that occurred during the movie's production, events that Emma Thompson had to participate like the Cannes presentation of the magnificent Carrington movie she pulled with Christopher Hampton, its dull press conference where the British press dared to ask her an inappropriate question on her teenage life. Which made her condemn the British press as a bunch of old maiden aunts, a description it rightfully deserves as another incident occurs during the movie's making with one of its actors.
But more than that, this book's the chance to see how a movie creates ties between its crew. Some that last after a shooting, others not so. But during the time of a movie, a Summer camp atmosphere where friendships and good memories occured.
In this occasion, a great working climate that proves you can do a masterpiece without having to create it under chaos. Which some filmmakers have the naivety of believing. As if one's best ideas always occur during the most unpleasant stress.
As for Emma Thompson's prose, it's incredible how whether on script, on film, or on diaries, her view of life stays witty, but also conscientious for other crew members' concerns; whether it's about their work or their well-being. Especially when scenes take a long time getting prepared and actors can lose patience with all this waiting.
A nice and grounded reality on the making of a movie. One whose production took years to make. For which Emma Thompson was nominated as an actress, but also won prizes for her debut scriptwriting.
