Bears a disconcerting resemblance to Disney’s Tarzan cartoon.

The story sets a promising stage: a near-future California saturated with superfast connectivity, virtual-reality overlays, instantaneous access to communication and information, wearable technology, medical semi-miracles, omnipresent surveillance, advanced military hardware, and ever-lurking terrorism. Mr. Vinge drops Robert Gu onto that stage for us to follow, once a Nobel-winning poet and thoroughly rotten person, now a recovering Alzheimer’s patient inhabiting a miraculously regenerated body--and an excellent point-of-view character for we behind-the-times readers. Robert discovers that the cure that restored his mind also altered both his talents and his personality (for good and ill), befriends (more or less) his precocious granddaughter and a student at the high school that hosts his “adult education” classes, is recruited into a cabal of his similarly resuscitated peers seeking to preserve what is left of the world’s libraries from technology-enhanced shredding, and makes a shady deal with a Mysterious Stranger who appears as a virtual rabbit and is also conspiring with an elite intelligence agent plotting to “save” the world by dangerous means. And that’s as far as it goes. Just when all the players are in place, Robert has begun to really change, the first act has come to a crashingly dramatic conclusion, the baddies are in the first-setback stage, and Rabbit is lurking--Mr. Vinge types the words “The End.” What? Just like Disney’s cartoon Tarzan, which noodles around establishing the scene and the characters, only to leave them (literally) hanging just when things might get interesting!
